The shiny cowbird Molothrus bonariensis has expanded its range into the Ecuadorian Andes, yet temporal variation in recently established populations and their local host associations remain poorly characterised. This study integrates standardised counts and reproductive observations at two localities in the Guayllabamba basin: Cumbayá (2320 m a.s.l.; 116 monthly counts; ≈460 h) and Puembo (2515 m a.s.l.; 28 monthly counts; ≈110 h). In Cumbayá, we documented 28 brood-parasitism events, all involving Zonotrichia capensis. In Puembo, we recorded six events: four with Pheucticus chrysogaster, one with Rauenia bonariensis, and one with Z. capensis. A negative binomial regression of the Cumbayá counts detected strong variation among months (χ²₁₁ = 141.67; p < 0.001) and a positive effect of year (χ²₁ = 33.01; p < 0.001). Counts were generally higher during the first half of the year and declined sharply from July onward. Puembo showed a qualitatively similar pattern. The results document strong seasonality, a positive interannual trend in the local count index, and R. bonariensis as a functional host in Ecuador. Future monitoring should integrate abundance, host phenology, and reproductive success to evaluate the mechanisms and consequences of these interactions.
