En Colombia, la ictiofauna de la cuenca del río Putumayo es una de las menos exploradas del país y carece casi por completo de colecciones ictiológicas de la región. Los estudios de su fauna íctica comenzaron apenas en la década de 1980 y publicados luego por Castro (1994). En Perú, las investigaciones en la Zona Reservada de Gueppi y en elRío Lagartococha y estudios recientes de Hidalgo y Olivera (2003) han aportado información de los peces de la cuenca del río Putumayo
