Abstract (en):

La Orinoquia colombiana tiene una extensión de 350 000 km2 que representan aproximadamente la tercera parte del territorio nacional. Administrativamente comprende los departamentos de Arauca, Casanare, Guainía, Meta, Guaviare y Vichada. Fisiográficamente la provincia Orinoquia-Amazonia se subdivide en cuatro unidades geográficas: a) Piedemonte tectonizado del Arauca, Casanare y Meta; b) piedemonte depositacional del Meta y Casanare; c) planicies bajas de la Orinoquia inundable (Casanare, Arauca); d) planicies altas de la Orinoquia no inundable (Meta y Vichada) (IGAC 1999). Todas estas unidades proporcionan una gran diversidad de paisajes y hábitat que junto a la estacionalidad climática han contribuido a la diversificación de la ictiofauna en ésta región. Las principales subcuencas colombianas de la cuenca del Orinoco son los ríos Arauca, Meta, Tomo, Tuparro, Vichada y Guaviare (IGAC 1999). El río Tomo nace cerca de la laguna de Carimagua en el departamento del Meta, luego atraviesa el departamento del Vichada, donde finalmente vierte sus aguas directamente al río Orinoco. Tiene una longitud aproximada de 606 km y sus principales afluentes son el río Tuparro, Tuparrito y el caño Tuparro (IGAC 1999).
