Abstract (en):

The present study evaluates occupation of Caiman crocodilus fuscus (babilla) at artificial lagoons (jagüeyes) constructed as a watering place for cattle. These water bodies are located on the coastal anthropic savannah landscape matrix in the Colombian Caribbean, in the Sucre department, belonging to the tropical dry forest with high environmental deterioration. Population of babillas in three jagüeyes without connection between them, were analyzed through successives captures, both in dry and rainy seasons. The statistical results shown significant differences (p<0,05) among the babilla population due to the lagoon dimensions. The occupation for gender and sexual maturity also shown significant differences (p<0,05), as well as the density along year seasons. The âjagüeyesâ are recognized as a refuge for this subspecies in the study area, and they can support moderate balance populations, becoming valuables conservation units for the region. It states that there is site fidelity, manifested mainly in females, and that this is related to the supply of habitat and reproductive factors.
