Nesting colonies represent key areas for the reproduction of the most characteristic and abundant waterbirds
from the Colombian and Venezuelan flooded Llanos. During the rainy season of 2012 and the onset of the
2013 dry season, I located a colony in a ranch called Las Cadenas, located in the Casanare department. Eleven
species were observed nesting, which places it as the most diverse of those described to date in the region of the Llanos. According to the owners of the property on which sits the colony, birds begin to nest with the arrival of rainfalls in April and leave the colony in November. Compared to other colonies described for the Colombian and Venezuelan Llanos and given its size (6,3 has) and the estimated number of nests, around 500, this colony can be considered small.
