Páramo birds in Colombia: ecological characteristics according to diet and body weight groups

Abstract (en):

The Paramo is a unique Andean ecosystem with different types of vegetation and aquatic systems. It is used by several bird species, but considering only restricted species excludes many others that use it. An ecological analysis was performed that included all bird species that make use of it by diet and weight discontinuities. Analysis was performed on bird records for Colombian páramos and four categories for permanence are proposed. 207 species are frequently reported in Colombian páramos (49 exclusively, 69 regularly, 65 peripherally, and 24 not permanently). Thraupidae, Trochilidae, Tyrannidae, and Furnariidae predominate. Many species are found in the cordillera Oriental and less for Serranía de Perijá and Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. 22 species are endemic and 26 near-endemic to Colombia. Small sized birds that consume insects and small invertebrates predominate, but almost half consume other types of resources (nectar and fruits, and in less proportion seeds, vertebrates and carrion). The heaviest species feed on vertebrates and carrion, and also aquatic resources. Several species need more information to understand their lasting presence in páramos. All species require information on abundances and use of resources.
