Stingless bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Meliponini) of Colombia

Abstract (en):

La tribu Meliponini pertenece al grupo de abejas corbiculadas de la subfamilia Apinae y agrupa todas aquellas abejas conocidas como “abejas sin aguijón” encontradas en las áreas tropicales y subtropicales del mundo (Roubik 1989). Su tamaño varía desde aproximadamente 2 mm (Leurotrigona pusilla, Moure et al. 1988 ) hasta 1,5 cm (géneroMelipona, Michener 2000). Junto con las abejas de miel (Apis mellifera), son las únicas que poseen comportamiento altamente social (eusocialidad). Existen varios cientos de especies, pero su número real es difícil de establecer debido a la abundancia de especies crípticas (Michener 1990) y razas geográficas, las cuales muchas veces difieren entre sí en caracteres muy superficiales. Las abejas sin aguijón se caracterizan principalmente por tener aguijón reducido, alas con venación débil o reducida y ojos desnudos (excepto en el género Trichotrigona, Camargo & Moure 1983); además construyen nidos muy característicos para albergar su cría con entradas generalmente conspicuas, las cuales, en algunos casos, sirven para identificar especies
