Firsts records of Great Sapphirewing, Pterophanes cyanopterus (Fraser, 1839), (Apodiformes, Trochilidae) in the state of Antioquia, Colombia

Abstract (en):

For the first time the occurrence of the Great Sapphirewing (Pterophanes cyanopterus) in the state of Antioquia is reported in two localities of the municipality of Sonsón (Cerro Las Palomas and Cerro La Vieja). These new records represent an expansion of 66 km of its northern range in the Central Andes Mountain Range in Colombia. This northern limit of the Great Sapphirewing coincides with distributional limit of several other species of birds along the mountain range. There is an altitudinal depression in the area associated with substantial changes in climatic conditions, an aspect that may explain such distributional limits. However, such causes are still uncertain, and alternative explanations such as historical factors related to the orogeny and habitat must be considered.
