Magdalena River is born in the Central Mountain Range of the Colombian Andes in the La Magdalena Lagoon at 3685 meters above sea level. It has a total length of 1538 km and a watershed that occupies 256 622 sq km. It flows across the departments of Huila, Tolima, Cundinamarca, Boyacá, Caldas, Antioquia, Santander, Cesar, Bolívar, Magdalena and Atlántico (IGAC 1970). Without a doubt it is the most important basin of the country, seat of the nation‘s principal cities and more than 80% of its population.Close to 90% of the country’s gross domestic product is Fish Species of the Middle Basin of the Magdalena River, Colombia also generated there. During its better days in the 1970s, it contributed almost 80% of the fish extracted from Colombia‘s continental territory(Mojica 2002). The middle valley of the Magdalena extends from the Honda torrents to the town of Tamalameque (Lozano y Dister 1990). It’s main tributaries originating in the Central Mountain Range are the Guarinó, La Miel, Cocorná, Samaná Norte, San Bartolomé, Ité and Cimitarra rivers. Its main tributaries originating in the Eastern Mountain Range are the Negro, Ermitaño, Carare, Opón, Sogamoso and Lebrija rivers.

El río Magdalena nace en la cordillera Central de Los Andes de Colombia en la laguna de La Magdalena, a 3685 m.s.n.m. Posee una longitud total de 1538 km. y una cuenca hidrográfica que ocupa 256 622 km2. Recorre los departamentos de Huila, Tolima, Cundinamarca, Boyacá, Caldas, Antioquia, Santander, Cesar, Bolívar, Magdalena y Atlántico (IGAC 1970). Sin lugar a dudas se trata de la cuenca más importante del país, en donde se localizan las ciudades principales y se concentra más del 80% de la población nacional y genera cerca del 90% del producto interno del país. En términos de extracción pesquera aportó en sus mejores momentos, en la década del 70 del siglo pasado, casi el 80% de la pesca continental de Colombia (Mojica 2002). La parte media del Magdalena se extiende desde el raudal de Honda hasta población de Tamalameque (Lozano & Dister 1990), y tiene como principales tributarios provenientes de la Cordillera Central los ríos Guarinó, La Miel, Cocorná, Samaná Norte, San Bartolomé, Ité y Cimitarra y de la Oriental los ríos Negro, Ermitaño, Carare, Opón, Sogamoso y Lebrija
